However, as this generation continues to play out in Nintendo’s favor, Sony may be taking a few cues from its competitor’s playbook for future iterations of its PlayStation and PlayStation Portable hardware. According to a pair of recently published patent applications filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, Sony is eyeing input devices that look to expand on current touch-screen and motion-sensing utilities currently employed in the gaming sector.

Though much of both patents are written in a suitably esoteric language (“The actuatable portion is actuatable by the actuator between first and second positions”), the first application justifies its existence by noting that while “existing touch screens are configured to receive a mechanical input and provide a visible output,” they “are not configured to provide both a visible and a mechanical output.”

The application then proceeds to describe a device that provides a touch-feedback sensation upon contact with a touch screen. The device described is not limited to a single screen, and may be used for a variety of applications, including “a gaming device, a phone, a portable media player, an email device, web browser device, or navigation device.”

The second application filed by Harrison details a handheld unit that transfers images from a second device through gestures. Once transferred, the images appear on both the handheld device’s touch screen and the original machine’s screen. As with the first patent application, the device can be a “gaming device, phone, portable media player, email device, web browser device, or navigation device.”

Both applications were submitted for review by former Sony Worldwide Studios president Phil Harrison in January, but were only made public late last week.

The trophies will be assigned by each game’s developer, not Sony, and will be associated with a task of relative difficulty; bronze medals will be doled out for easy feats, and gold for harder objectives. “The platinum medals will only be given when all other tasks are completed,” Eric Lempel, director of PlayStation Network Operations, told GameSpot.

Each trophy will have a numeric value associated with it, and this value will contribute to an overall leveling system, much like those in role-playing games. However, the user will be unable to see how much each trophy is worth, and instead will see only a completion percentage for each game and each overall level. When asked why Sony was avoiding tying a visible score to the PS3′s trophy system, Lempel said, “We don’t know why our users would be interested in a numeric value… We think the medals best represent one’s progress.”

Although trophies will become standard in all games in the future, they will be added to only a few existing games, including Super Stardust and Warhawk. Other than BioShock, Sony said that it could not confirm trophies for any existing or future third-party PS3 games, including the wildly popular Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. However, it did announce a spate of upcoming first-party games that would include trophies, including LittleBigPlanet, MotorStorm: Pacific Rift, NBA 09, Resistance 2, and SOCOM: US Navy SEALs Confrontation.

Unfortunately, PS3 trophies will not be retroactive. For games that have already been released, players must first download a patch for said game, and will then have to perform the feats to receive the trophies as if they were playing the game for the first time.

Players’ PS3 trophies will be viewable via a new profile window that will be accessible via the XrossMediaBar (XMB), which, as rumored, will be available in-game. The XMB will offer access to at-a-glance trophy tallies, a more detailed breakdown of medals, and a side-by-side comparison of a player’s trophies and those of any friend.

The new in-game XMB will offer a host of other new features as well, including the ability to send text messages to friends in-game and to jump to other PS3 services. However, many of said services–including Web browsing and voice chat–will force players to quit their game and then access the XMB traditionally. The rumored customizable in-game background-music feature, which will let players stream music from their hard drives while playing a game, was also confirmed. However, the feature will be game-specific, which means that it is up to developers to enable the functionality or not.

History may be repeating itself, given that the supposed K-Mart flyer clearly shows a 20GB Xbox 360 system with a “new low price” of $299.99. Currently the 20GB model sells for a suggested retail price of $349.99. The scanned image shows only part of the Xbox 360 listing, and nothing from the rest of the ad save for box art of Civilization Revolution and 2K Sports’ Prizefighter. Such pictures can be faked, but if this one was, the creator at least paid enough attention to duplicate the K-Mart circular’s font as well as details like the twin-color blowout box announcing the price drop.

The person who posted the images says that the price cut should go into effect around July 6, a Sunday, likely meaning that the ad is intended to run in that edition of the newspaper. It’s fairly common for newspaper ads such as this to be printed a week or more in advance of the publication date, and with Civilization Revolution set for release on July 8, the timing of this leak fits well. That’s also the week before the big E3 Media and Business Summit in Los Angeles, a time when console makers traditionally try to generate momentum for their systems with big announcements.

Although it hasn’t quite been a year since the last round of Xbox 360 price cuts, those were a bit mild ($20 on the Core and $30 on the Elite), and the intervening time frame has seen the Xbox 360 hardware lose considerable momentum to the PlayStation 3. According to figures from the industry-tracking NPD Group, the Xbox 360 beat the PS3 in US hardware sales every single month through the end of 2007. However, for the first five months of 2008, the PS3 has outsold the Xbox 360 three times, and was only a thin margin behind the Microsoft console for the other two.

Microsoft needs to spark system sales to fend off Sony’s advancing PS3. A price cut is one of the simplest, most direct ways to encourage gamers on the fence to take the plunge. Right now customers are likely looking at a Blu-ray drive and built-in wireless support as features well worth the $50 difference between a 20GB Xbox 360 and a 40GB PS3. Widening that gap to a nice round $100 would no doubt make Microsoft’s system a much more enticing value proposition for many gamers.

For his conception of the film, Nolan was inspired by the Joker’s first two appearances in the comics and Batman: The Long Halloween. The director used an IMAX camera to film six major action sequences, including the Joker’s first appearance in the film. The Batsuit was redesigned, with a cowl allowing Bale to move his head. The film also introduces a recreation of the Batcycle, known as the Batpod.

Warner Bros. created an aggressive viral marketing campaign for The Dark Knight, developing promotional websites and trailers highlighting screenshots of Heath Ledger as the Joker. After Ledger’s untimely death in January 2008, however, the studio refocused its promotional campaign. The film will be released on July 17, 2008 in Australia,^[4] on July 18, 2008 in North America,and on July 25, 2008 in the United Kingdom.

Plot

The Dark Knight opens with Batman, Lieutenant James Gordon, and new district attorney Harvey Dent beginning to succeed in rounding up the criminals that plague Gotham City. They are unexpectedly challenged when a mysterious criminal mastermind known as the Joker, appears in Gotham. Batman’s struggle against the Joker becomes deeply personal, forcing him to “confront everything he believes” and to improve his technology to stop the madman’s campaign of destruction. During the course of the film, a love triangle develops between Bruce Wayne, Dent and Rachel Dawes.

• Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne / Batman: A billionaire who has dedicated himself to protecting Gotham City from the criminal underworld. Bale was confident in his choice to return in the role because of the positive response to his performance in Batman Begins. He trained in the Keysi Fighting Method, and performed many of his own stunts. He did not gain as much muscle this time, because of the storyline in which Batman builds a new suit that allows him to move with more agility.

The actor described Batman’s dilemma as whether “[his crusade is] something that has an end. Can he quit and have an ordinary life? The kind of manic intensity someone has to have to maintain the passion and the anger that they felt as a child, takes an effort after awhile, to keep doing that. At some point, you have to exorcise your demons.” He added, “Now you have not just a young man in pain attempting to find some kind of an answer, you have somebody who actually has power, who is burdened by that power, and is having to recognize the difference between attaining that power and holding on to it.” According to Dan Join, in Empire, Bale felt that because Batman’s personality was strongly established in the first film, it was unlikely that his character would be overshadowed by the villains, stating: “I have no problem with competing with someone else. And that’s going to make a better movie.”

• Heath Ledger as The Joker: Heath Ledger described the Joker as a “psychopathic, mass murdering, schizophrenic clown with zero empathy“.Nolan had wanted to work with Ledger on a number of projects in the past, but had been unable to do so. When Ledger saw Batman Begins, he realized a way to make the character work in that film’s tone, and Nolan agreed with his anarchic interpretation. To prepare for the role, Ledger lived alone in a hotel room for a month, formulating the character’s posture, voice and psychology.While he initially found it difficult, Ledger was eventually able to generate a voice that did not sound like Jack Nicholson’s take on the character in Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman film. He started a diary, in which he wrote the Joker’s thoughts and feelings to guide himself during his performance. He was also given Batman: The Killing Joke and Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth to read, which he “really tried to read [...] and put it down”.Ledger also cited inspirations such as A Clockwork Orange and Sid Vicious, which were “a very early starting point for Christian [Bale] and I. But we kind of flew far away from that pretty quickly and into another world altogether.” “There’s a bit of everything in him. There’s nothing that consistent,” Ledger said, adding that “There are a few more surprises to him.”

Before Ledger was confirmed to play the Joker in July 2006,Paul Bettany, Lachy Hulme, Adrien Brody,Steve Carell, and Robin Williams publicly expressed interest in the role. On not being invited to reprise the part, Jack Nicholson said: “You can’t believe the reasons things do or don’t happen. Not asking me how to do the sequel is that kind of thing. … Maybe it’s not a mistake. Maybe it was the right thing, but to be candid, I’m furious.” After the first official trailer was released, director Guillermo del Toro and comic book writer Jeph Loeb praised Ledger’s portrayal of the character, while Batman: The Animated Series co-creator Paul Dini said, “He seems more street than any other version of the Joker. … His attitude is mordant and sardonic as opposed to manic. … No goofy gags or puns for him. This Joker doesn’t split sides: he splits skulls.” Mark Hamill, who voiced the part on Batman: The Animated Series, said “The balls-out debauched psycho approach seems like a great way of reinventing everyone’s favorite scary (and scar-y) clown.”

After filming had already ended, Ledger died, on January 22, 2008, leading to intense press attention and memorial tributes. In March 2008, four months prior to the film’s scheduled release, Larry Carroll reported that “like Batman himself, Christian Bale, Maggie Gyllenhaal and director Christopher Nolan find themselves shifting gears between being secretive, superheroic and fighting back a deep sadness.” “It was tremendously emotional, right when he passed, having to go back in and look at him every day,” Nolan recalled. “But the truth is, I feel very lucky to have something productive to do, to have a performance that he was very, very proud of, and that he had entrusted to me to finish.”Nolan has dedicated the film to Ledger’s memory.

• Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent / Two-Face: The Gotham district attorney; Dent’s battle with the Joker turns Dent into a murderous, disfigured vigilante called “Two-Face”.Producer Charles Roven described Dent as initially the “white knight of the city”. Wayne sees Dent as his heir, which comes back to the theme of him realizing that being Batman will be a lifelong mission, and the tragedy that follows when Dent is corrupted. Whereas Two-Face is an evil villain in the comics, Nolan chose to portray him as a twisted vigilante to emphasize his role as Batman’s counterpart, and Eckhart, who has played corrupt men in films such as The Black Dahlia, Thank You For Smoking and In the Company of Men, notes: “[He] is still true to himself. He’s a crime fighter, he’s not killing good people. He’s not a bad guy, not purely,” while admitting: “I’m interested in good guys gone wrong.” Nolan and David S. Goyer had originally considered using Dent in Batman Begins, but they replaced him with the new character Rachel Dawes when they realized they “couldn’t do him justice”. Before Eckhart was cast in February 2007, Liev Schreiber, Josh Lucas,and Ryan Phillippe had expressed interest in the role.^[38] Nolan chose Eckhart, whom he had considered for the lead role in Memento, citing his “extraordinary” ability as an actor, his embodiment of “that kind of chiselled, American hero quality” projected by Robert Redford, and his subtextual “edge”.

• Maggie Gyllenhaal as Rachel Dawes: The Gotham assistant D.A. and childhood friend of Bruce Wayne, she is one of the few people who know that he is Batman. Gyllenhaal has acknowledged that her character is a damsel in distress to an extent, adding that Nolan had sought ways to empower her character so that “Rachel’s really clear about what’s important to her and unwilling to compromise her morals, which made a nice change” from the many conflicted characters whom she has previously portrayed. In August 2005, before the casting of Gyllenhaal, producer Charles Roven had reported that actress Katie Holmes (who portrayed Rachel Dawes in Batman Begins) was going to reprise the role in The Dark Knight; however, in January 2007, Holmes turned down the offer to reprise her role as Rachel Dawes due to scheduling conflicts, and, by March 2007, Gyllenhaal was in “final talks” for the part.

Production

Screenwriter Vincent Ngo wrote the spec script Tonight, He Comes in 1996. The draft, about a troubled 12-year-old and a fallen superhero, was initially picked up by director Tony Scott as a potential project. Producer Akiva Goldsman came across the script, which he had considered a favorite, and encouraged Richard Saperstein, then president of development and production at Artisan Entertainment, to acquire it in 2002. Director Michael Mann was initially attached to direct Tonight, He Comes, but he instead opted to direct Miami Vice (2006).Eventually, Artisan placed the project in turnaround, and it was acquired by Goldsman.

Screenwriters Vince Gilligan and John August performed rewrites of Ngo’s script, and Jonathan Mostow was attached to direct the film. Under Mostow’s supervision, a 10-page treatment was written to be pitched to actor Will Smith to portray the lead role in the film, since both had worked together on Hitch (2005). Both Mostow and Smith were not yet committed to make the project an active priority at the time. Several studios pursued the opportunity to finance the film, and Columbia Pictures succeeded in acquiring the prospect in February 2005. A second draft was scripted by Gilligan following the finalization of the deal with Columbia. The film was initially slated for a holiday 2006 release.

In November 2005, Mostow and Smith committed to Tonight, He Comes, with production slated to begin in Los Angeles in summer 2006. Smith had set up a pay or play contract to film I Am Legend (2007) under Warner Bros. after completion of Tonight, He Comes. Mostow eventually departed from the project due to creative differences. Italian director Gabriele Muccino filled Mostow’s vacancy in May 2006. Since Muccino was busy editing The Pursuit of Happyness starring Smith, which Muccino had directed, Smith switched projects to film I Am Legend first for its December 2007 release, and then film Tonight, He Comes afterward. Later in the month, Muccino left the project because of an incompatibility with filming the story. Since Muccino was preparing The Pursuit of Happyness, the studio had delayed the production start for Tonight, He Comes to summer 2007, enabling Warner Bros. to begin production of I Am Legend with Smith.

In October 2006, Peter Berg was attached to direct Tonight, He Comes with production slated to begin in May 2007 in Los Angeles, the story’s setting. Before filming began, Tonight, He Comes was retitled John Hancock. The film title was eventually shortened to Hancock. Filming began on Hancock on July 3, 2007 in Los Angeles, having a production budget of $150 million. Locations like Hollywood Boulevard were designed to look damaged, having rubble, overturned vehicles, and fires.Smith’s character is also an alcoholic, so for scenes in liquor stores, the art department designed fake labels such as Pap Smear Vodka for the bottles because “brown-bag brands” like Thunderbird and Night Train refused to lend their names. After finishing work on the film, Smith gave crew members gift cards for a Scientology personality test at any Church of Scientology centre as a wrap present.

Plot

A pandemic of unknown cause is spreading across the northeast of the US, mysteriously within well-defined borders, with victims experiencing loss of speech and physical disorientation, followed by suicide: people jump from buildings, shoot or hang themselves, one feeds himself to lions in the zoo, some cut themselves with barbed wire or glass, etc. The protagonist, a science teacher named Elliot Moore (Mark Wahlberg), flees together with his estranged wife, Alma Moore (Zooey Deschanel) and the 8-year-old daughter Jess (Ashlyn Sanchez) of Elliot’s best friend, Julian (John Leguizamo), while Julian tries to reach his wife. The rest of the film follows them on their journey.

Production

In January 2007, writer-director M. Night Shyamalan traveled from Philadelphia to Hollywood to prepare the live-action film based on Avatar: The Last Airbender. Shyamalan submitted a spec script entitled The Green Effect to various studios, but none expressed enough interest to purchase the script. The director collected ideas and notes from meetings, returning home to Philadelphia to rewrite the script, and 20th Century Fox greenlit the project. Now titled The Happening, the film will be produced by Shyamalan and Barry Mendel and will be the director’s first R-rated project. Shyamalan compared the film to the earlier paranoia films The Birds (1963) and Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956).

Later in March, actor Mark Wahlberg, with whom Shyamalan had been negotiating at the same time as his deal with Fox, was cast into the lead role of the $57 million project. Shyamalan had previously cast Wahlberg’s brother Donnie Wahlberg in The Sixth Sense. The India-based company UTV will co-finance 50% of the film’s budget and distribute the film in India, with Fox distributing in the rest of the territories. Production began in August in Philadelphia. The release date for The Happening is set for June 13, 2008, intentionally set for Friday the 13th to suit the thriller.

The film was in development since the 1989 release of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, because Spielberg and Ford disagreed over Lucas’ original concept. Screenwriters Jeb Stuart, Jeffrey Boam, Frank Darabont and Jeff Nathanson wrote drafts, before David Koepp‘s script satisfied all three men. Shooting finally began on June 18, 2007, and took place in New Mexico; New Haven, Connecticut; Hawaii; Fresno, California; and soundstages in Los Angeles. In order to keep aesthetic continuity with the previous films, the crew relied on traditional stuntwork instead of computer-generated stunt doubles, and cinematographer Janusz Kamiński studied Douglas Slocombe‘s style from the previous films.

Marketing relied heavily on the public’s nostalgia for the series, with products taking inspiration from all four films. Anticipation for the film was heightened by secrecy, which resulted in a legal dispute over an extra violating his non-disclosure agreement, and the arrest of another man for stealing a computer containing various documents related to the production. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was released worldwide on May 22, 2008.

Plot

In 1957, Colonel-Doctor Irina Spalko (Cate Blanchett) and a convoy of Soviet agents posing as U.S. soldiers infiltrate a military base in the Nevada desert. They force Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) to lead them to a crate in “Hangar 51“, which holds the remains of an extraterrestrial creature that crashed ten years before in Roswell, New Mexico. Jones attempts to escape during an alien autopsy, but is foiled by his partner Mac (Ray Winstone), who reveals that he is working with the Soviets. After a fight and an elaborate vehicle chase through the warehouse, Jones escapes on a rocket sled into the desert, where he stumbles upon a nuclear test town and survives a nuclear blast by hiding in a lead-lined refrigerator. While being debriefed, Jones discovers he is under FBI investigation because of Mac’s Soviet ties. Jones returns to Marshall College, where he is offered a leave of absence to avoid being fired because of the investigation. While leaving, Jones is stopped by Mutt Williams (Shia LaBeouf) and told that his old colleague, Harold Oxley (John Hurt), disappeared after discovering a crystal skull near the Nazca lines in Peru.

In Peru, Jones and Mutt discover that Oxley was locked in a church-operated psychiatric hospital until Soviet soldiers kidnapped him. In Oxley’s former cell, Jones discovers clues to the grave of Francisco de Orellana, a Conquistador who went missing in the 1500s while seeking Akator (also known as El Dorado). Jones finds the crystal skull that Oxley hid in Orellana’s grave. The skull is elongated in the shape that indigenous peoples formed their own skulls into; the Soviets believe the skull is from an extraterrestrial life-form, holding great psychic power. The Soviets capture Indy and Mutt and take them to the camp where they are holding Oxley and Mutt’s mother, Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen), who reveals that Mutt is Jones’s son. The four escape from the camp, leading to a lengthy vehicle chase involving sword fights and several Soviet soldiers being killed by siafu ants. Mutt, Marion, Mac, Oxley, and Jones ride an amphibious vehicle over a cliff and down three waterfalls, eventually finding the Temple of Akator, a Maya-style pyramid in the Amazon rainforest. Claiming that he is a double agent working against the Soviets, Mac enters the temple with Jones and the group while leaving a trail for the Soviets to follow.

The group enters the temple and Jones uses the skull to open the door to a chamber tomb. Inside, thirteen crystal skeletons, one with a missing skull, are seated on thrones. When the Soviets arrive, Mac reveals that he lied about being a double agent. Spalko places the skull onto the skeleton, and it begins communicating to the group through Oxley using an ancient Mayan dialect. Jones translates this to mean that the aliens want to give them a great gift. Spalko demands to know everything, and the skulls begin firing knowledge into her eyes, causing her to shake. As a portal to another dimension appears over the room, Oxley regains his sanity and explains that the aliens are inter-dimensional beings who taught the Maya their advanced technology. Jones, Mutt, Marion, and Oxley escape from the temple, but Mac is sucked into the portal. The skeletons form into a single alien which continues to feed Spalko with knowledge; however, the knowledge overwhelms Spalko, causing her to ignite and disintegrate. The temple crumbles, and a flying saucer rises from the debris and disappears. Back home, Jones is made an associate dean and marries Marion.

Harrison Ford plays Dr. Henry “Indiana” Jones, Jr. To prepare for the role, the 64-year-old Ford spent three hours a day at a gym, and relied on a high-protein diet of fish and vegetables.Ford had kept fit during the series’ hiatus anyway, as he hoped for another film.He performed many of his own stunts because stunt technology had become safer since 1989, and he also felt it improved his performance. He argued, “The appeal of Indiana Jones isn’t his youth but his imagination, his resourcefulness. His physicality is a big part of it, especially the way he gets out of tight situations. But it’s not all hitting people and falling from high places. My ambition in action is to have the audience look straight in the face of character and not at the back of a capable stuntman’s head. I hope to continue that no matter how old I get.”

Ford felt his reprise would also help American culture be less paranoid about aging (he refused to dye his hair for the role), because of the film’s family appeal: “This is a movie which is geared not to [the young] segment of the demographic, an age-defined segment [...] We’ve got a great shot at breaking the movie demographic constraints.” He told Koepp to add more references to his age in the script. Spielberg said Ford was not too old to play Indiana: “When a guy gets to be that age and he still packs the same punch, and he still runs just as fast and climbs just as high, he’s gonna be breathing a little heavier at the end of the set piece. And I felt, ‘Let’s have some fun with that. Let’s not hide that.’” Spielberg recalled the line in Raiders, “It’s not the years, it’s the mileage”,and felt he could not tell the difference between Ford during the shoots for Last Crusade and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

Shia LaBeouf plays Henry “Mutt” Williams / Henry Jones, III, a motorcycle-riding greaser and Indiana’s sidekick and son. Frank Marshall said Mutt brings humor to the story because of his youthful arrogance, causing banter with the older and wiser Jones. Koepp credited the character’s creation to Jeff Nathanson and Lucas. LaBeouf was Spielberg’s first and only choice for the role. Excited at the prospect of being in an Indiana Jones film, LaBeouf signed on without reading the script and did not know what character he would play. He worked out and gained fifteen pounds of muscle for the role,^[11] and also repeatedly watched the other films to get into character.LaBeouf also watched Blackboard Jungle and The Wild One to get into his character’s mindset, copying mannerisms and words from characters in those films, such as the use of a switchblade as a weapon.Lucas also consulted on the greaser look, joking that LaBeouf was “sent to the American Graffiti school of greaserland”. LaBeouf pulled his hip’s rotator cuff when filming his duel with Spalko, which was his first injury in his career. The injury got worse throughout filming until it pulled his groin.

Cate Blanchett plays the villainous Soviet agent Irina Spalko. Screenwriter David Koepp created the character.^[5] Frank Marshall said Spalko continued the tradition of Indiana having a love-hate relationship “with every woman he ever comes in contact with”. Blanchett had wanted to play a villain for a “couple of years”, and enjoyed being part of the Indiana Jones legacy as she loved the previous films. Spielberg praised Blanchett as a “master of disguise”, and considers her his favorite Indiana Jones villain for coming up with much of Spalko’s characteristics.^[Spalko's bob cut was her idea, with the character's stern looks and behaviour recalling Rosa Klebb in From Russia with Love. Blanchett learned to fence for the character, but during filming, Spielberg decided to give Spalko "karate chop" skills.LaBeouf recalled Blanchett was elusive on set, and Ford was surprised when he met her on set outside of costume. He noted, "There's no aspect of her behavior that was not consistent with this bizarre person she's playing."

Karen Allen reprises the role of Marion Ravenwood, under the married name of Marion Williams, who appeared in Raiders of the Lost Ark. Allen was not aware her character was in the script until Spielberg called her in January 2007, saying, "It's been announced! We're gonna make Indiana Jones 4! And guess what? You're in it!" Ford found Allen "one of the easiest people to work with [he's] ever known. She’s a completely self-sufficient woman, and that’s part of the character she plays. A lot of her charm and the charm of the character is there. And again, it’s not an age-dependent thing. It has to do with her spirit and her nature.” Allen found Ford easier to work with on this film, in contrast to the first film, where she slowly befriended the private actor.

Ray Winstone plays George “Mac” McHale, a British agent whom Jones worked alongside in World War II, but has now allied with the Russians due to his financial problems. The character acts as a spin on Sallah and Rene Belloq — Jones’s friend and nemesis, respectively, in Raiders of the Lost Ark. Spielberg cast Winstone as he found him “one of the most brilliant actors around”, having seen Sexy Beast. Winstone tore his hamstring during filming. “I keep getting these action parts as I’m getting older,” he remarked. Like John Hurt, Winstone wished to see the script prior to committing to the film. In interviews on British TV Winstone explained that he was only able to read the script if it was delivered by courier, who waited while he read the script, and returned to the US with the script once Winstone had read it. His reasoning for wanting to read the script was, “If I’m gonna be in it, I want to be in it.” He also stated that once filming was completed he had to return the script, such was the secrecy about the film. He has since been presented with a copy of the script to keep.

John Hurt plays Harold Oxley, Mutt’s surrogate father and an old friend of Indiana, whom he lost contact with in 1937. Six months prior to the events of the film, he went insane after discovering the crystal skull, which commanded him to return it to Akator. Frank Darabont had suggested Hurt when he was writing the screenplay.^[25] The character is inspired by Ben Gunn from Treasure Island.^[18] Hurt wanted to read the script before signing on, unlike other cast members who came on “because Steven — you know, ‘God’ — was doing it. And I said, ‘Well, I need to have a little bit of previous knowledge even if God is doing it.’ So they sent a courier over with the script from Los Angeles, gave it to me at three o’clock in the afternoon in London, collected it again at eight o’clock in the evening, and he returned the next day to Los Angeles.” Hurt only appears in the film’s second half.

Jim Broadbent plays Dean Charles Stanforth, an academic colleague and friend of Jones. Broadbent’s character stands in for Marcus Brody, whose portrayer, Denholm Elliott, died in 1992. As a tribute to Elliott, the filmmakers put a portrait and a statue on the Marshall College location, and a picture on Jones’ desk.

Igor Jijikine plays the Russian Colonel Dovchenko. His character stands in for the heavily-built henchmen Pat Roach played in the previous films (Roach died in 2004).

Joel Stoffer and Neil Flynn cameo as FBI agents interrogating Indiana, in a scene following the opening sequence. Alan Dale plays General Ross, who protests his innocence. Andrew Divoff and Pavel Lychnikoff play Russian soldiers. Spielberg cast Russian-speaking actors as Russian soldiers so their accents would be authentic. Dimitri Diatchenko plays Spalko’s right hand man who battles Indiana at Marshall College. Diatchenko bulked up to 250 pounds to look menacing, and his role was originally minor with ten days of filming. When shooting the fight, Ford accidentally hit his chin, and Spielberg liked Diatchenko’s humorous looking reaction, so he expanded his role to three months of filming.

Sean Connery turned down an offer to reprise his role as Henry Jones, Sr., as he found retirement too enjoyable. Lucas stated that in hindsight it was good that Connery did not briefly appear, as it would disappoint the audience when his character would not come along for the film’s adventure. Ford joked, “I’m old enough to play my own father in this one.” A picture of the character is seen in Indiana Jones’ house and it is revealed that he died.

Premise

Wesley Gibson (James McAvoy) is offered the opportunity to seek revenge in the murder of his father, who was an assassin. Gibson is invited by his father’s partner, Sloan (Morgan Freeman), to follow in his father’s footsteps. Sloan’s second-in-command, Fox (Angelina Jolie), mentors Gibson, who follows death orders issued by The Fates, weavers who read individuals’ destinies in fabrics produced by mystical looms.

• James McAvoy as Wesley Gibson: A meek 25-year-old who works in a cubicle. Gibson has a disloyal girlfriend and a boss who bullies him.^[4] McAvoy was cast in the lead role in October 2006. McAvoy, who had screen-tested for the role early in 2006, was initially rejected due to the studio seeking an actor that had conventional Hollywood leading-man looks and physique. The actor was later recalled, being considered the “runt of the litter” of those who tested. According to McAvoy, “They [ultimately] wanted someone geeky.” The Scottish actor, who portrays an American in the film, trained for the film’s action scenes.
• Morgan Freeman as Sloan: The assassin partner of Wesley Gibson’s deceased father.
• Angelina Jolie as Fox: Sloan’s second-in-command. Jolie was cast in March 2007 after screenwriter Dean Georgaris rewrote the screenplay to tailor the role for her.

Production

The comic book miniseries Wanted by Mark Millar first attracted the attention of Universal Studios executive Jeff Kirschenbaum, a comic book fan who sought a film adaptation that would be considered a “hard-R” and encouraged the studio to pick up the rights to the miniseries. By 2004, producer Marc Platt set up development of the film adaptation. In December 2005, Russian director Timur Bekmambetov was attached to helm the project as his first English-language film, with the script being written by Derek Haas and Michael Brandt.Millar did not like the first draft of the script. He explained, “I wanted the film to basically be the opposite of the Spider-Man movie, the idea of someone getting powers and realizing they can do what they want, then choosing the dark path. The [script] I read was just too tame. It just seemed a little bit Americanized. But Timur came in with his Eastern European madness, and he really made it nasty. He went closer to the spirit of the book.”

Director Timur Bekmambetov said that the film would keep the same characters from the miniseries, though the director would take liberty in adapting the comic book’s world. In July 2006, screenwriter Chris Morgan was hired to revise the third act of the Wanted script written by Haas and Brandt.The script was also rewritten by screenwriter Dean Georgaris to include the role of The Fox for actress Angelina Jolie.Haas and Brandt returned to even out the character of Wesley Gibson, which they had established in their first draft.

Comic book author Mark Millar described the first half of the film as being close to the graphic novel. Millar also said that the film’s ending was similar, though it was relocated elsewhere from the setting in the graphic novel. The superhero costumes in the series were also removed, with the exception of the leather attire worn by Wesley Gibson and The Fox. Ironically, this had been Millar’s intent when writing the graphic novel, although he and artist J. G. Jones had forgotten to. “I wanted them to have those powers and then just wear those costumes for the initiation, but just for one panel.” he said. “And then I forgot. I’d have liked [the filmmakers] to keep the supervillain mythos. That’s one thing I’m kind of sad they didn’t keep, ’cause I really liked that, the idea that supervillains and heroes did exist at one point and they’re all gone now.”^[15] The story arc of the Fates issuing death orders in line with the series’s original theme of predestination was a new element to the film, an addition to which Millar was amicable.

Wanted will include free running and parkour in addition to car chases and gunfights utilizing “bullet-turning” technology.Wanted creator Mark Millar saw previsualized footage for the film and said the footage had raised his expectations for the film adaptation.The film will be the first to use the Red One digital camera, a new tool that has gained interest among cinematographers.

Location plate shooting took place in Chicago in April 2007. Several chase scenes, including one with a low flying helicopter, were shot in Chicago on May 17 and 18 on Wacker Drive along the Chicago River, between Columbus Drive and LaSalle Street.Production moved to the Czech Republic later in May, scheduled for 12 weeks of shooting. For the film, production designer John Myhre constructed a large textile factory in Prague as part of an industrial world, the setting of a mythological environment in which looms create fabrics interwoven with the destinies of people, interpreted by weavers to issue orders for specific individuals’ deaths to preserve the balance of the world.^[Afterward, filming moved to Budapest, then returned to Chicago in August.
